The Real Truth about SEO
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
So many companies offer a guarantee that they will get your website into the top 10 of search engine results on a given search phrase. They will joyfully do this, providing you hand over large sums of money and then sign a disclaimer that states '..this company does not guarantee 10 top listings' or something to that effect. Such a claim could not possibly stand up to reason.
Example: I want my 'holiday accommodations in the uk' website to appear in the top 10 of listings on Google whenever somebody searches for 'holiday accommodation uk'. There are currently 14,000,000 competitors for the particular phrase.
How many of those competitors have paid for top 10 listings? More than 10? More than 100? If so, how will I possibly contend with this level of competition?
A SEO 'specialists' may claim to know of the whereabouts of an unforeseen gap in Google's defences. That gap could then be exploited to gain short term access to high rankings.
The use of clever tricks like hidden text, gateways, re-direction techniques and the like may deliver a short period of success, but could eventually result in your website receiving a total ban and removal from listings altogether.
Those ingenious developers at Google will in due course discover this breach in the defences and form measures to penalised anybody who chooses to use it.
Honesty - still the best policy.
Google is undoubtedly the most popular search engine in the world. It has been engineered to specifically assess the written content of a website and deliver a ranking verdict that simulates the experience of a human visitor.
The truth is, whilst some will claim you can buy your way to the top of the listings through misleading the search engine spiders, the future of SEO will be steered in favour of the human user. A website that claims to sell antique furniture, should sell antique furniture. The content must reflect the purpose of the site.

Sick of all the Flash web sites?
Recently I became so sick of all the Flash on some websites I decided to remove it from my system. Now I have found a utility to give YOU the choice of viewing or not.
Download the installer (FireFox only, get FireFox now if you don't have it) from here FireFox Flash Blocker. Great addon for a great product. Or better still, stop those ugly Scripts running by using No Script. The latter is my own choice.

YCS in Yea has to do with YCS.com or YnotDigital or YCS.net.au
Only today (14/9/2010) it has come to my attention that another business in WA has a very similar domain name, YCS.com and YCS.net.au. Needless to say these people are NOTHING to do with me or my business.
If you receive notification from anyone purporting to be from YCS please make sure you look for my name, as I am the only one who will email you, and the domain ycs.com.au in the email address.
If you do receive any contact please notify me immediately so I might attend to it quickly.

Tony.

Autorun USB causes Trojan installation
In recent history I have had cause to remove a number of trojans installed via a usb stick or drive.
The trojans are easy enough to stop but it does mean you need to make a couple of changes to your system.
1. Download Microsoft's Disable autorun for removable media. Click to download and run it.
2. On every USB drive or other device you use create a folder in the root folder called autorun.inf.
Stopping the autorun feature will mean you will not be able to autostart cd's /dvd's and the autoun.inf folder will not allow devices to have one created if you place your usb drive into an infected system.
Please be careful moving your usb devices about as they are the equivalent of the old floppy disk, but worse.

This web page How to read email headers will help you understand how useful being able to follow email headers can be.
If you are at all unsure of the sender then check the headers! If it still looks suspicious then do not respond to it.
